ARA Celebrates 20th Anniversary!

Founded in 1989, AIDS Research Alliance celebrated its 20th year in HIV science at a gala benefit event held on the night of SLR_headshot_2009.jpgOctober 15, 2009 in Los Angeles.  Hosted by award-winning actress, singer and AIDS activist, Sheryl Lee Ralph, the event raised over $160,000 for AIDS Research Alliance-thanks to the generosity of our corporate sponsors, MacHeist3, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, The Capital Group, Time Warner and Trader Joe's.

Over 220 guests supported our 20th Anniversary Gala, including top donors Mark Itkin of Los Angeles, Janet G. Michaels of Pasadena, CA, and Mrs. Edward Tallmadge of Milwaukee, WI. (contined from email) Mrs. Tallmadge made the reason for her gift very clear: “The tragedy of AIDS is just as important as our troubled economy, our nation’s energy independence and global climate change. We must support AIDS Research Alliance and its work to find a vaccine and a cure.”

During the evening’s program, AIDS Research Alliance presented service awards named for our founder, Dr. Paul Rothman. The four honorees were singer and actress, Queen Latifah for her performance as a women with HIV in the movie, Life Support; Timothy Corrigan for 9 years of service on ARA’s Board of Directors, Dr. Sy Young for 10+ years of service on ARA’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Dr. Judith S. Currier, one of our scientific collaborators at UCLA for her research exploring the affects of HIV in women.

In honor of this historic milestone, AIDS Research Alliance developed three short videos about our early history, our growth and accomplishments, and our current research.  These three videos have been posted on YouTube and can be viewed using the following links:

Part 1:  Early History

Part 2:  Growth & Accomplishments

Part 3:  Current & Future Research

AIDS Research Alliance helped to develop about half of the anti-HIV drugs currently available.  Now, AIDS Research Alliance is the only HIV research initiative developing a specific drug targeting latent HIV -the virus not killed by existing therapies.  If approved by the FDA, this new drug will unveil an entirely new treatment approach, which could lead to a cure strategy.  AIDS Research Alliance needs your financial support - a gift of $10, $25, $50 or $100 -to finish this vital research ASAP.  Please make your tax-deductible gift today! Kaiser Permanente Supports ARA!

Kaiser Permanente recently awarded a $10,000 grant to AIDS Research Alliance to champion our on-going community education activities targeting women and communities of color.  "We are pleased to work collaboratively with Kaiser Permanente to ensure that two of the communities hit hard by the AIDS epidemic benefit from AIDS research," said Colleen Murphy, Director of Community Education & Outreach at AIDS Research Alliance.

ARA’s community educators work with local AIDS service programs and other community-minded organizations, like Kaiser Permanente, to mobilize support for AIDS research from those Americans infected or affected by HIV. (contined from email) Even if our learners choose not to participate in a clinical research study, they learn new information about how HIV treatments work, how research is conducted to protect the safety of all research volunteers, and how participation in a research study will accelerate our progress toward a vaccine and a cure for AIDS.

Because of our on-going education efforts, AIDS Research Alliance is well known for recruiting some of the most gender and racially diverse cohorts of study volunteers of any research site in the U.S. “Research volunteers are the heroes of AIDS research, says Carolyn H. Carlburg, President & CEO of ARA. “The real costs to educate and recruit almost a thousand research volunteers every year are rarely covered by study sponsors, and so we are proud to work shoulder-to-shoulder with Kaiser Permanente to advance HIV science.”
