Micronutrients/Neuropathy Study

A study testing the effectiveness of a high-dose formulation of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) in pain reduction, and nerve protection & strengthening, in those suffering from peripheral neuropathy resulting from treatment with either ddI or d4T.

Background

Peripheral neuropathy occurs in more than 10% of patients beginning antiretroviral therapy with either d4T or ddI. Similar neuropathic conditions have been reported to experience some benefit on a similar regimen of high-dose micronutrients. There is evidence to suggest that such treatment will be non-toxic with few or no side effects.

Objective

To determine whether a specific combination of high-dose micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) is effective in reducing pain resulting from peripheral neuropathy, and effective in strengthening and protecting nerves at risk from damage.

Study Design

A double-blind, placebo-controlled 12 -week pilot study of high dose micronutrients.

Study volunteers will be compensated up to $25 per visit for their inconvenience.

Inclusion
Criteria

  • HIV-positive male or female at least 18 years old
  • Currently taking d4T and/or ddI
  • T-cell count greater than or equal to 100
  • Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy within the last 12 months (must bring written documentation to screening visit).
  • If female, not pregnant and willing to use a barrier method of contraception throughout the study
