AIDS ReSearch Alliance is a non-profit, community based,
HIV/AIDS research organization that is dedicated to ending
the AIDS pandemic. Founded in 1989, ARA has spent the last
15 years researching anti-HIV medications and vaccines.
AIDS
ReSearch Alliances mission is critical. Neither a cure
nor an effective HIV vaccine have been found. Worldwide, 15,000
people become newly infected with HIV every day. Worse still,
8,000 people die of HIV/AIDS-associated illnesses, including
1,600 children under 15 years. Every day. This is a higher
total than in any year since the beginning of the epidemic,
and rates are once again rising in the U.S.
According
to estimates from the Joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS
(UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization, 37 million adults50
percent of them womenand 2.5 million children were living
with HIV at the end of 2003. In the United States, there are
approximately 40,000 new HIV infections each year, about 70
percent among men and 30 percent among women. Of these newly
infected people, half are younger than 25 years of age.
As
the AIDS epidemic in the United States moves aggressively
into new populations, AIDS ReSearch Alliance must also follow
those populations with its efforts to raise awareness of the
on-going AIDS crisis and prevention education, and the critical
need for further medical research. AIDS ReSearch Alliance
can have a positive impact on audiences who attend events
like the Lingerie Bowl by having a presence and engaging in
a dialogue with attendees, performers, corporate sponsors
and other supporters.
In
recognizing the importance of increasing AIDS awareness and
the critical need for HIV/AIDS research, Horizon Productions
has partnered with AIDS ReSearch Alliance to bring this message
to a population that is increasingly at risk for HIV infection.
Their decision to benefit AIDS research with proceeds from
the Lingerie Bowl shows a commitment to AIDS medical research,
HIV testing and prevention.
AIDS
ReSearch Alliances trained outreach team will be visible
during the event at the L.A. Coliseum, disseminating educational
materials about HIV testing, actively recruiting volunteers
for innovative clinical trialsincluding the upcoming
preventative HIV vaccine trialand promoting increased
funding for medical research. We will also use the opportunity
to increase awareness over the web via links from the event
website.
AIDS
ReSearch Alliance believes in the importance of encouraging
every individual to develop strategies and skills conducive
to healthy and safe sexual attitudes and practices. If the
participation of an AIDS research organization encourages
people to learn more about HIV/AIDS, and increases awareness
about medical research and the need for increased HIV testing,
then this will be judged a success.
