RESEARCH ALLIANCE FIRST IN LA TO BEGIN HIV VACCINE STUDY
HIV vaccine study volunteer to be injected on Thursday,
March 25, 2004
WHAT:
AIDS ReSearch Alliance is the first site in Los Angeles to
begin a new,
Phase I study of an experimental, preventative HIV vaccine.
A vaccine study volunteer will receive his initial injection
Thursday morning in the AIDS ReSearch Alliance clinic. Immediately
following the injection, the volunteer will be available for
interviews, along with AIDS ReSearch Alliance’s doctor
and director.

WHY:
• The AIDS pandemic is raging out of control, with no
cure in sight. A preventative vaccine is our best hope to
prevent further infections both in the US and across the world.
• Representing different communities affected by the
AIDS epidemic, these HIV negative participants are volunteering
themselves to help bring about an end to AIDS.
• The experimental vaccine may make antibodies to HIV
proteins and may also elicit cellular immunity. Study volunteers
can not get HIV from this vaccine, although they may experience
a “false positive” test result during the 5-year
study.
• AIDS ReSearch Alliance is a non-profit, community-based,
HIV/AIDS research organization that is dedicated to ending
the AIDS pandemic. Founded in 1989, AIDS ReSearch Alliance
has a 15-year track record of success in the field of HIV/AIDS
medical research.
